Mr. McCain portrays himself as a Washington maverick unswayed by special interests, referring recently to lobbyists as “birds of prey.” Yet in his current campaign, more than 40 fund-raisers and top advisers have lobbied or worked for an array of gambling interests — including tribal and Las Vegas casinos, lottery companies and online poker purveyors.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates questioned a fallen marine’s award forcovering a grenade to save his comrades.
Peralta's mother, Rosa, has said she will not accept the Navy Cross award out of protest, saying it is a slight against her son, who was born in Mexico in 1979 and enlisted in the Marine Corps the same day he received his green card.
The Obama vs. McCain debate just ended. How do I sum it up? Simple. Go study the Kennedy vs. Nixon debate in 1960 for your answer. It’s not just what is said, it’s the body language and mannerisms of a candidate when the other is speaking that convey a message. In the end Nixon looked stressed and out of touch and Kennedy won the election. Let’s hope that tonight’s 1960 debate repeat is a foreshadow of good things to come.
Update
It seems others agree with my assessment:
"The president and I agree on most issues," McCain said in a May 22, 2003 interview on Fox's "Your World with Neil Cavuto." "There was a recent study that showed that I voted with the president over 90 percent of the time, higher than a lot of my even Republican colleagues."
Verdict: True
Only the debate isn’t on for another 3 hours. What a cocky strategy the McFailin’ campaign in running.
Although the fate of tonight's presidential debate in Mississippi remains very much up in the air, John McCain has apparently already won it — if you believe an Internet ad an astute reader spotted next to this piece in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal this morning.
"With respect to the debates it is my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in roughly 40 days will be responsible for this mess," he said. "I think it is going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once. I don't see why we can't be constructive in helping with this problem."
